What to Expect When Bringing in a Rescue or Rehome StaffyBull

Congratulations on your desire to adopt an older rescue or rehome Staffordshire Bull Terrier! As you begin your journey, you may have a lot of questions. Here are answers to some of the more common ones:

I want a SBT puppy, but they cost too much. Can I adopt a homeless SBT PUPPY?

Not in the USA at this time. There are (at last count) less than 900 purebred AKC StaffyBulls in our country, classifying the breed as rare. You will not see puppies in rescue until a breed is overbred and the population out of control. I hope and pray we will never reach that point. Anything in rescue that is labeled as a SBT puppy is wrongly labeled. Those are usually pit-mix pups.

Should I adopt one of the "Staffordshire Bull Terriers" in my local shelter?

Shelter dogs labeled as SBT are almost always wrongly-labeled pitbull and other mixes. In almost every case, they have ZERO relation to a true english Staffordshire Bull Terrier. This is a rare breed! We see maybe 10 homeless each year in the whole nation, which statistically makes sense when you consider the overall registered population. Shelter workers are confused about the breeds. You may certainly adopt a mis-labeled dog (all dogs need love!!) but do not expect the dog to have the same traits as an english Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I have a pet cat. How can I find a rescue Staffordshire Bull Terrier who likes cats?

Fosterhomes and others evaluating the rescue dog can expose him to a cat and then tell you, "He's fine with cats!" But is that a guarantee? What if the dog was fine with THAT cat, but is not with yours? Rescue dogs have unknown history and breeding. SBT can have a lot of prey-drive - it's inherited from their parents. In regards to a rescue dog, were his parents super prey driven? We don't know.

If you love your kitty, consider getting an 8 week old puppy instead. Raise them together and things will almost always work out fine.

I have multiple pet dogs in my home. How can I find the right SBT to add to the family?

The SBT is a terrier breed. Terriers are known for their confident, plucky nature - submissive with people, dominant with dogs. All dogs challenge each other; it's natural. But a Staffordshire Bull Terrier is very strong and can be tenacious. Bringing a SBT into your multi-dog household can be extremely difficult, especially when you do not know the history of the dog, nor it's inherited personality traits; negligence on your part can prove tragic to other pets. However, SBT almost always do well in a two-dog household if paired with a dog of the opposite sex. This is the best fit.

What's the difference between a rescue and a rehome?

A rescue dog usually comes from a "homeless" background. He was surrendered or found as a stray. A rehome is not homeless, but the breeder needs to find a new living situation for the dog (perhaps his first owners divorced, or he is a retired show/breeding dog who needs a family of his own, etc).

Rescue dogs usually have unknown history. Rehomes usually do not.

How long will training take with a rescue or rehome SBT?

There will be exceptions, but you should expect the dog to come to you with little to NO training. Training alone might take only a matter of months, if you are consistent and diligent. However, before the training will work, you often need to go through a period of BONDING.

Expect the BONDING PERIOD TO LAST ABOUT A YEAR.

Many rescue dogs have had mostly negative experiences with people. Expect this dog to need a FULL YEAR of love before she will begin to come out of her shell and respond well to you. Patience and love are the keys. She might be a silly thing forever, but usually rescue dogs respond after this time of healing.

Many rehome-dogs have been kennel dogs with little to no socializing with people. Or they were in a first-home that didn't train them properly or neglected them. If this is the case, again you must be ready to spend a FULL YEAR loving on and being patient with this dog before you might see a bond and an ability to really be in tune with you and learn. Again there are no guarantees.

Remember, RESCUE is a matter of YOU doing a needy dog a favor. Always be prepared to be pleasantly surprised - you may adopt the exception (a well-trained, well adjusted dog!!) BUT keep your expectations low and the dog has a better chance to IMPRESS YOU AND MAKE YOU HAPPY.
