There are three breeds with somewhat similar names: American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff), American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) and Staffordshire Bull Terrier (SBT) --- the first two are almost identical and some are even registered as both. The third breed, Staffordshire Bull Terrier (SBT) is a different breed entirely.

English SBT is the only breed we work with. We do not have resources to help with Pit Bulls. Please see www.pbrc.net.

Oasis is not a "shelter". The goal of Oasis Rescue is to act as a go-between for those looking to adopt a SBT and those who have SBT's needing homes.

Oasis is completely volunteer run and receives no funding.

Also, read the recent list archives to find info about available dogs. A formal application, home-check and adoption fee will be required later, through whichever shelter or organization is caring for the homeless dog.

Congratulations on your decision to adopt a homeless dog. I can think of nothing more rewarding. But before choosing your new pet, be sure you know all the facts about pet overpopulation. I want to see all dogs find homes, but not at the expense of deceiving compassionate people.

I've spent years assisting in animal rescue. I started my first "shelter" when I was eleven years old, living in the village of Bethel, Alaska. Though our efforts were small and somewhat ignorant, my sister, friends and I managed to feed, care for and rehome some of the village's down and out mutts. Even then I couldn't stand to see creatures hungry and unloved. Being likewise involved since then, I've met many wonderful, compassionate people. Unfortunately, I've also noticed that many people involved in "rescue" are at odds with "breeders." This is very unfortunate.

Yes, I've heard ALL of the negative rumors about dog breeders. Some say they're to blame for the suffering of millions of unwanted dogs. But very few people actually do their homework before repeating these myths.

The facts are easy to find. Here's a summary:

The VAST majority of unwanted dogs are of mixed breed: mutts. These mixes were received as pets, purchased for free or very little money. They're young animals, were often owned by young adults who were moving and usually have behavior problems that the owner felt unable to cope with.

Some other items of interest: Over the past twenty years the pet overpopulation & euthanization rate has dropped by 86%, while the rate of pet ownership has increased 59%. This improvement was due to education etc. and not from breeding restrictions. Previous programs have proven that imposing breeding restrictions causes an INCREASE in the amount of homeless and euthanized dogs. I believe that most dogs should be altered and that each family should seriously consider giving a home to a homeless dog. But I also commend breeders who are devoted to maintaining a quality, pure breed. Quality purebred dogs - with good temperaments, sold to dedicated owners at a price reflecting their quality - are not and will never be part of the problem of unwanted animals.

Oasis Rescue cannot be held responsible for the dogs referred through our volunteer efforts, or for the potential adopters referred. I have had no direct contact with the dogs. Oasis assumes that whomever is fostering or sheltering these dogs has carefully evaluated them. However, before adopting, contact a professional if you do not have experience and the ability to perform your own temperament testing. A typical SBT is extremely loving toward all people. They are outgoing and bold but do not make good watchdogs and are not suitable for "people work" (such as police attack dogs, etc) due to centuries of selective breeding for affection toward humans. SBTs (like many breeds) have a strong prey drive and can be intolerant of other same-gender dogs. The behavior is perfectly canine, but the strength of a SBT gives them an advantage. Therefore the SBT is judged more harshly by society when he engages in normal behavior. Unless you are willing to take all possible steps to avoid putting your dog in this precarious position, you should not adopt a SBT.

If you have a dog who needs a home, be certain to meet the potential adopter, contact their references and perform a strict home check. Due to the SBTs looks, it is quite common that they attract the wrong kind of owners. It is your responsibility to protect these dogs and their reputation.
