After seeing the following erroneous description of Staffordshire Bull Terriers somewhere, I decided it was time to illustrate a page on what a SOUND StaffyBull body looks like: "Staffordshire Bull Terriers are short haired, muscular, athletic looking dogs. . . " Do you see the error with this statement? I hope you do. But in case you cannot, then read this from the true BREED STANDARD: "The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a smooth-coated dog. It should be of great strength for its size and, although muscular, should be active and agile." Now go back and read the first description. See the difference? They say the dog is athletic *LOOKING. When in reality, the breed standard demands it be truly athletic - that's what active and agile mean. The standard also calls for a dog of great strength "for it's size", indicating it's not* loaded down with massive muscles - for if it were, you wouldn't call it strong "for it's size". When I have time to finish this page, I hope to have something as helpful as Diane Jessup's illustrated article on soundness - I LOVE that article - but I want one illustrated with StaffyBulls instead of pitbulls. In the meantime, I'm posting a sample dog picture below for you and giving you a homework assignment. Your assignment: Using the photo below, work through Diane's Step by Step guide on Soundness, here: http://www.workingpitbull.com/soundness.htm I'm not going to tell you whether this dog is sound, or not --- or if he's my ideal or not. You study it and see what you think. Remember, this is a young dog. He will develop more muscle tone etc. until 2.5 or 3 years - he hasn't reached his full beauty yet. But his bones will not be moving from this point on, so he's an adequate model for your assignment. After you work through the guide with this sample dog, hopefully you'll have a better idea of why soundness matters. I hope you'll see that breeding unsound dogs is cruel and very sad. NOTE: PLEASE WATCH BELOW - as I get photos, I will add more SAMPLE DOGS for your use in studying. After studying the samples, take photos of other dogs and go through the guide again. Happy learning!
